“NASA and SpaceX launch Thai liquid crystal research to the International Space Station (ISS).”
On September 15 at 5:11 AM Thailand time, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus NG-23 spacecraft launched to the International Space Station (ISS), carrying a special payload — a Thai research experiment under the project “Thailand Liquid Crystal in Space (TLC).” This study aims to investigate the behavior of liquid crystals in microgravity, opening new dimensions for innovation in display technology and electronic devices.

The Thailand Liquid Crystal in Space (TLC) project is led by Associate Professor Dr. Natthaphon Chatraem from the Department of Physics, Kasetsart University, in collaboration with GISTDA, and supported by NASA. The experiment focuses on studying “defects” in liquid crystal structures when subjected to sudden thermal changes in thin films. The findings could pave the way for the development of higher-quality LCD screens, or even display technologies for astronaut helmets in the future.
This marks a major milestone, as Thai research has successfully reached space—a feat made even more significant given the highly competitive nature of NASA’s programs, where fewer than 10% of submitted projects are selected. Moreover, all experiments must pass three rounds of rigorous safety reviews to minimize risks to the International Space Station. To meet these standards, the Thai team carefully designed and adapted their equipment while maintaining the integrity and quality of the experiment.

On the support side, GISTDA played a crucial role by providing funding, equipment, and expertise in space engineering, as well as coordinating efforts that led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between NASA and Kasetsart University. The project also received funding from PMU-C, helping ensure the experiment’s success. Thai engineers contributed to developing the payload using the same standard equipment employed aboard the ISS.
Thus, the Thailand Liquid Crystal in Space (TLC) project is not only a scientific experiment but also a landmark achievement for Thailand in its journey toward space exploration—serving as an inspiration for a new generation of researchers aiming to make their mark on the global stage
